Introduction

Fly reels started as simple line holders—a way to store extra line while an angler fished. There were no sophisticated drags, no adjustable tension, and certainly no smooth resistance to slow down a running fish. Instead, anglers had to palm the spool or apply manual pressure to keep control, often leading to lost fish and snapped leaders.
