On April 16, 2025, The Guardian published a sobering report: Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is undergoing its sixth mass coral bleaching event since 2016, and scientists warn that this could be the reef's final chance for recovery—depending largely on the direction taken by Australia’s next government. The repeated stress of warming waters, exacerbated by climate change and marine heatwaves, continues to threaten one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems.
