The Miramichi River in New Brunswick has long been known as one of the great Atlantic salmon fisheries of the world. For decades, anglers traveled from across the globe to cast flies into its storied pools. Today, that legacy is under threat. Since 2012, Atlantic salmon populations in the river have dropped by nearly 86 percent. What was once a thriving run is now a fraction of its historic abundance, leaving conservationists, local communities, and fly fishers deeply concerned.
