In April 2025, The Times reported a severe decline in Scotland’s wild Atlantic salmon populations, with 72% of the country's rivers now rated "poor" for salmon conservation. In response, 153 rivers have implemented mandatory catch-and-release measures in an effort to protect what remains of these iconic fish. Anglers on these rivers must return their catches or face a penalty—or even prosecution under updated conservation laws. Conservationists attribute the crisis to a combination of climate change, water pollution, disease, and parasitic infestations linked to nearby fish farming operations.
